The Chandler Family Association holds an annual meeting for the purposes of sharing research, taking care of association business, and socializing among the membership. The location of the annual meeting is moved each year in order to make it accessible to members in different geographical areas. Hover over the compass rose (above at right) for links to information and photos from past meetings.
The 2010 annual meeting of the CFA will be September 16-18 in Hampton, Virginia. This meeting will be three days instead of the usual two, so make your plans now to arrive in time for the first scheduled event on Thursday, September 16. Reservations and pre-payment are required for the two bus tours and the group dinner. You should send your registration and reservations in by August 6. John Chandler, ancestor of many CFA members, arrived in Virginia in 1610 at the age of 9. As an adult, he owned thousands of acres of property and made his home in what is now Hampton. We will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of John Chandler’s arrival and, at the same time, the city of Hampton will be celebrating its 400th anniversary. You can help publicize the 2010 meeting by making our flyer available for display at your local library and historical or genealogical society. Download the flyer and print it as many times as you like. If you have any questions about accommodations or costs, please contact Helen at
2010 Meeting Registration and Event Reservations Anyone interested in Chandler genealogy is invited to attend the 2010 Annual Meeting of The Chandler Family Association. There is a $15.00 fee for attendees who are not members of the CFA; however, this includes a one-year CFA membership and subscription to its award-winning newsletter. Walk-ins who pay the $15 fee will have all the benefits of membership during the meeting except for those events that required pre-registration and pre-payment. Schedule details can be found elsewhere on this page. The three events requiring pre-registration and pre-payment are the Jamestown Tour on Thursday ($45 per person), dinner at the Crab Shack on Thursday evening ($30 per person), and the Saturday Hampton Tour ($24 per person). Except for Thursday evening's dinner at the Crab Shack, all meals will be "on your own." You may want to take advantage on Friday of the Embassy Suite's inexpensive buffet lunch. Please complete the registration and reservation process by August 6. Even if you do not plan to participate in the tours or the meal, we would like you to complete and submit the top section of the Registration and Tours Reservation form. It will greatly help our planning to know who and how many will be attending the 2010 meeting. You may pay for the special events by check or with PayPal.
Click here to pay with a PayPal transaction. The PayPal page will open in a new window, with this window open behind for reference. Dick will demonstrate the database on a large screen to small groups several times during the day. During the business meeting on Saturday, we will enjoy “John Chandler—First of the Name,” a brief celebration of John’s arrival in Virginia in 1610. Additional special presentations are being discussed and may be added later. More details will be added here when available and in the summer newsletter. Thursday, September 16 —
Thursday, September 16 — After returning to the hotel from the Jamestown tour at 5:30 p.m., we will gather at 6 p.m. in the lobby to carpool to Crab Shack on the James for dinner. A signup sheet will be provided to match available drivers with those needing a ride. Cost for dinner at Crab Shack: $30 per person. You must notify Helen of your menu choices for dinner. Saturday’s tour will begin after the annual business meeting and lunch on your own. The Embassy Suites restaurant will be open, but the buffet is not served on Saturday. A number of other restaurants are available in the immediate area. Sites to be visited on this tour include historic St. John’s Episcopal Church, a city park on property once owned by John and Elizabeth Chandler, and other historic and Chandler-specific sites. The exact itinerary for this tour will be developed over the next few months, but current plans have the Hampton History Museum as our final stop. A special treat will be a presentation by the museum staff on life in the early 17th century. We will return to the hotel by 6 p.m. and you will be on your own for dinner. Cost: $24 per person.
Located on the southeastern tip of the Virginia peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton is the oldest continuously settled English community in the United States. Originally an Indian village called Kecoughtan, it was a first stop by the very first English colonists—they called it Point Comfort—before they sailed up the James River to Jamestown. Hampton is within easy driving distance of Jamestown, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fort Monroe, and other historic and recreational sites. Planning your family vacation around the weekend of our CFA meeting would allow you to take full advantage of the area’s historic riches.
